Paul H. Eager, born in Warrenton, Mississippi, in 1852 to Rev. E. C. Eager, was a professor of English at Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi. He married Mary J. Whitfield in 1883.
The collection contains biographical sketches and writings of well-known poets and authors of Mississippi during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Eager assembled the materials for his literary history of Mississippi. Present in the collection are newspaper clippings, letters, and manuscript and printed writings of authors including Bishop William M. Green, W. C. Falkner, Sherwood Bonner, Julie K. Wetherill, Lillion Blanchard Hines, Mrs. Quincy Ewing, Charles Woodward Hutson, Lelia Mary Evans, Augusta Reese Shuford, William F. Dunbar, Nell Carey, Barton Pittman, Nina Scott, Ida V. May Hardy, and Lafayette R. Hamberlin. Included are writing samples which were submitted to Eager for criticism and possible publication.
