The Future of Historical Headlines: Digitizing Louisiana Newspapers Project, Chronicling America, and free access to Historical Louisiana Newspapers
Project Manager Laura Charney will be presenting at the Louisiana Library Association's Annual Conference on March 7, 2013 at 11:00am at the Hilton Capitol Center in downtown Baton Rouge.
Since 2009 LSU Libraries has contributed over 210,000 historical Louisiana newspaper pages to the Library of Congress’s Chronicling America database. This effort has been made possible by two grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) as part of the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP). Over 75 Louisiana titles published between 1836 and 1922 featuring French, Spanish, and English content are or will soon be freely available online for searching and browsing. This presentation will discuss the process of opening access to these newspapers via digitization, the advantages and disadvantages of digitized newspapers, available complementary tools and resources from Library of Congress and LSU for teaching and research, and future plans for this project.
Registration is required to attend this conference. For more information please visit the Louisiana Library Association website.
