Text of document:

computer-based test interpretation "remains skeptical about the ultimate need for separate (ethical) guidelines for computer-based test interpretation [or within the present context, computer-assisted cognitive remediation techniques] perhaps,as a result of the advent and popularization of (these techniques) we will need to revise the Standards for Providers of Psychological Services (1977), revamp the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing (1985) or even redo the Ethical Principles for Psychologists (1981), but in the final analysis these documents provide clear [procedural and ethical] guidelines for those desiring assistance in the determination of appropriate practices in the use of the techniques. We should not saddle computer-based test interpretation [or cognitive remediation] with separate technical and ethical guidelines simply because it is the application of a powerful technology" (p. 320).

The Committee, on the contrary, presents the proposed Division 40 Guidelines as. a reasonable and necessary expansion and specific application of the more generic APA ethical Principles and Standards documents cited in the quotation. It is the Committee s hope that the proposed Guidelines document will, in fact, be viewed as fully congruent with and entirely supportive of Kramer s concluding statement: i.e., "as in all our work, we must remain vigilant so that technology is not abused in a manner that does harm to people or our profession" (320).
