ACTIVITIES

1. Roundtable meetings were held in January (prior to the Division Leadership Conference),March (at the Mid-Winter meeting of Divisions 29-42-43), and August (at APA Convention). Dorothy Cantor of the Board of Directors and Mike Sullivan of the Practice Directorate were invited guests at the August meeting.

3. At the March meeting, Divisions 17, 29, 31, 35, 42, 43, 6, and 49 were all represented. A decision was made to assess dues of $50 per member division per year to cover meeting expenses, mailings, liaison expenses, etc. APA Finance Office set up an account for the Roundtable and handles reimbursement as approved by the Chair.

4. Jean Carter represented the Roundtable at CAPP Meetings in January, March, July, and November, 1993, as well as the CAPP retreat held in October. All practice divisions received summary reports of those meetings. As part of this representation, she has also served on two CAPP subcommittees.

5. The Roundtable was asked to participate in the State Leadership Conference in March, presenting a description of the Roundtable and its services. Jean Carter and Art Bodin represented the Roundtable. One of the goals was to increase communication and coordination of effort between states and divisions.

6. At the CAPP Liaison Group Meeting held annually at APA, Jean Carter (as Chair of the Roundtable) was asked to present information about the Roundtable and assist in facilitating discussion of the needs of Divisions.

7. As follow-up to the efforts of the Roundtable over the

past year as well as the CAPP Liaison Group Meeting, all Pra< ice aivisions were invited to send a representative to the annual CAPP retreat held in October. A major agenda item for CAPP at the retreat was coming to an understanding of what practice divisions need from CAPP and the Practice Directorate and planning general strategies for meeting those needs.

a. The Chair of the Roundtable has consulted with the Presidents of Divisions 39 and 42,as well as members of those Divisions' Task Forces on the Protection of the Practice Directorate, to assist in providing a united front in consolidated efforts with Bryant Welch, Russ Newman and the rest of the Practice Directorate staff to protect the role of practice within APA.

PLANS FOR 1994

1. As part of the Roundtable meeting held prior to the Division Leadership Conference in January, the Roundtable will co-sponsor a practice advocacy workshop with CAPP and the Practice Directorate. Expected presenters are Ron Levant (Chair of CAPP), Russ Newman (Executive Director of the Practice Directorate) and  Mike Sullivan (Assistant Executive Director for State and Professional Affairs of the Practice Directorate).

2. Mike Sullivan and Jean Carter are preparing informational packets to be sent to Presidents-elect of practice divisions. These packets will alert division representatives to services available in the Practice Directorate and the most helpful route to accessing the appropriate services, as well as letting them know about public information and mailings that will keep them up-dated on activities of the Practice Directorate.

The packet will also include information about the Roundtable. Hopefully this information will allow Presidents-elect to move more quickly into colleagial working relationships with the Practice Directorate and with other practice division leaders.

3. Roundtable meetings will be held January 14 (the evening prior to the Division Leadership Conference), March (Thursday, March 10, 1994, 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.,at the Mid-Winter meeting of Divisions 29-42-43 at the Mountain Shadows Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona) and August (Saturday August 13, 1994, 7:00 - 8.00 a.m.). The Board of Directors, the Practice Directorate and the CEO of APA will be invited to send representatives to these meetings.

Jean Carter will continue to represent the Roundtable at CAPP meetings.

5. The Roundtable will continue its efforts to ensure that Division needs are attended to by CAPP. These will include attempting to get a CAPP member with responsibility for a portfolio that includes a significant focus on divisional issues. Included in this effort will be targetted nominations for CAPP, hopefully leading to a slate that is clearly earmarked for someone with significant divisional expertise and a clear identification with practice divisions. The practice divisions should also attempt to coordinate support for such a slate.

6. Discussions are underway with several divisions with the aim of ensuring that the needs of the practice community are properly attended to by APA headquarters staff and that the Practice Directorate and Commission on Health Care Reform get the broad-based support that is needed. These efforts may include the creation of a task force with representation by interested divisions.
