Dear Carl:
Enclosed is a plan for rotation of the membership for the Division 40 Ethics Committee that we discussed in our meeting in Seattle. You will note that includes plans for rotation of current members off the committee and for the appointment of new chairs. For the upcoming year we are suggesting that you and/or Ken Adams appoint two new members. In addition, two new members should be appointed each year with current members rotating off as indicated on the schedule in order to provide for fresh blood” on the committee. In addition, we are suggesting that a new chair be appointed to assume responsibility for the committee following the New York meeting.I would rotate off as chair of the committee but would remain as a member through 1997-1998 year as indicated in the plan of rotation.
For the new chair, I would like to recommend Bruce Becker. I have discussed this possibility with Bruce and he has indicated his willingness to assume the position of chair should you wish to appoint him. The committee also discussed names of persons who might be considered for membership in the committee. The first name we would recommend is that of Laetitia Thompson. Tish co-authored a recent article on the Ethics Code in Neuropsychological Practices which was published in the Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology. A second name to consider is that of Richard Naugle, Ph.D. Rick is CO-author of the Ethical Neuropsychologist”, feature in The Clinical Neuropsvchologist. A third name to consider is that of Wiley Mittenberg.Wiley has assisted the Ethics Committee by reviewing the APA book Ethical Issues in the Conduct of Research with Human Subjects.”Kerry de Hamsher is a fourth name to consider. Kerry presented on ethical issues in forensic neuropsychology at INS and also serves as a coordinator for ABCN examination. The last name that the committee discussed was that of Lydia Artiola.I do not know Lydia as well as the other people that I mentioned but she comes well recommended by other members on the Ethics Committee and she has indicated she will serve if asked.
There are several other individuals that you and Ken Adams could consider should the list
[Page 2]
I have given you not provide enough alternatives.David Loring has indicated an interest in serving on the Ethics Committee and was a co-presenter with Kerry de Hamsher at the workshop mentioned previously.Wilfred Van Gorp also presented at that workshop and did a credible job. Laurence Binder served as a co-author with Tish Thompson on the article which I described previously and accordingly might also be interested in serving on the committee. I also received recommendations concerning Harold Smith from Mel Schwartz and Douglas Johnson-Greene from Linas Bieliauskas. Two other names to consider would be Jeffery Barth, Ph.D. and Jerry Brittian.Jeff and Jerry have been gathering case examples of ethical dilemma which they plan to publish shortly. Rob Mapoo has also expressed an interest in serving on the committee and he has impressed me with his energy in other contexts. Finally, I received a letter of from James Youngjohn. Although I do not know him well I was impressed by the level of interest and thoughtfulness in a subsequent conversation that I had with him.
I assume that I have provided you with enough names to choose from to provide two new members for the upcoming year and possibly for several years in advance. If you have any questions or wish to discuss any of the individuals I have mentioned in the letter in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely yours,
