AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION

October 23, 1995

MEMORANDUM

TO: Presidents and Program Chairs, Selected APA Science Divisions

FROM: William C. Howell, PhD, and Virginia E. Holt, Science Directorate

SUBJECT: APA Science Division Programming Experiment in 1996

Following many requests from the scientific community for changes in the APA Convention, the Board of Convention Affairs (BCA) decided to experiment with the Convention programming schedule for one year. BCA asked that a small number of science divisions (3,6,7,8,14,21,25, and 28) participate in this one year programming trial at the 1996 Convention in Toronto. Due to this change in programming, Science Weekend will not be held at the 1996 Convention. Consequently, divisions would not make their typical donation of program time.

Many who attend the Convention have indicated that they would strongly prefer a briefer meeting --over 3 days, rather than 5. The programming experiment will incorporate this idea, allowing for programming to be compressed into 3 days --Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. All other divisions would continue to meet as usual-- on the full Friday through Tuesday schedule.

The programming for science divisions is scheduled for the later part of the convention rather than the beginning due to the fact that the practitioner workshops are all pre-convention, and it would be very difficult if not impossible to reorganize them. Making those involved in the workshops have to wait several days until the main part of their programming wouldn't make much sense, and would clearly hurt workshop attendance. And from what we have learned from science divisions we've contacted so far, some don't care which segment we have (so long as it's compressed) and several actually prefer the later schedule.

We will continue to provide publicity for division programming, and attempt to coordinate APA-wide science programs for Sunday-Tuesday.

Please remember that this is only an experiment in programming for the 1996 APA Convention. If this does not succeed as anticipated, then Science Weekend will resume at the 1997 APA Convention.

If you have any questions regarding this programming issue, please contact us at (202)336-6000. Thank you for your support of this change in programming.
