Dear Dr. Dodrill:
I am submitting my application for the Division 40 Newsletter Editor. In accordance with your instructions in the "Call for Nominations", I am submitting a letter of application, plans for review/change of the newsletter, and a current CV.
Dr. Roberta White has done an outstanding job with the newsletter and provides a wonderful model from which to examine any potential modifications. The newsletter serves as the primary means of communication between the Division and its members. Thus, such regular features such as the "President's Message", coverage and information regarding the APA convention, committee minutes, listing of new members, and articles on issues regarding the field (e.g., "Nondoctoral Technicians") have formed the backbone of the newsletter. However, while this communication is critical, it in essence is unidirectional. That is, the communication is from the division to the members. One of the thoughts I have for the newsletteris to try to provide a forum for publicly increasing communication from members to the Division (thereby also increasing communications between members as well, since all receive the newsletter).
In order to achieve this objective, I would like to outline a number of preliminary ideas. All share the same mechanism of soliciting information from the membership for Division-wide dissemination. I will outline four ideas. 1) Clinical Corner: My idea here is to provide a small column through which issues of immediate clinical relevance can be communicated. The hope here would be to foster a sense of inter-communication among the membership, perhaps by serving as a starting point for informal communications directly between members who may share the same ideas (or disagree), but who would otherwise not interact. 2) Research Lyceum: As with the "Clinical Corner", this column would serve to discuss issues related to research to foster communication among division colleagues. Issues may include calls for collaboration, discussion of recent findings, issues in test development, etc. 3 Brain Briefs: My thought here is a short column on quick dissemination of important research. This could be

[page 2]
discussing a recent article from a related discipline, or a discussion
of one's own research. This may overlap somewhat with the "Research Lyceum",
but it may also be tailored to be a specific vehicle. 4) "From the Membershipn"
Such a column could be introduced through which the membership could discuss
any issue, or communicate anything they felt important about our Division.
Perhaps it could be a way by which members could discuss critical or opposing
views of what they feel is occurring with the leadership within the Division.
As our rights in a democratic society allow, I see this opportunity as
healthy for our Division. -
Lastly, there is one other area I see which can serve as an important modification to the existing newsletter structure. The newsletter is primarily "forward-thinking" in its presentation, and I think this is the primary purpose of the newsletter. However, ours is a rich field, one which has been nurtured by an important interdisciplinary developmental focus. Thus, I would like to see a column entitled: Archives of Neuropsvcholoav or Neuroosvcholosv Archives. The purpose of this column would be to preserve and promote the history of our discipline. I see that this could be done by a number of venues which are different from that often seen in textbooks in Neuropsychology. The one I like the most would be interviews with forefathers of our field (e.g., Benton, Reitan, etc.), providing a personal perspective on the roots of our field. Such interviews could take place at one of our society meetings (i.e., little or no cost). Such a column could serve as a rich source of documentation for our growing discipline, and an important reminder (particularly for newcomers and students to our field) of where we have come from, and how we got there. I cannot think of a better organization more suitable for such documentation.
While all of these may not be feasible, they do represent my thoughts for modification of an already excellent product. If only a few such changes could be incorporated, perhaps we would invite the membership to help choose which feature(s) (or any other ideas) they would like to see included in any modification. This could be done by a simple questionnaire sent during a regular Division 40 mailing (i.e., at little or no cost).
I have been involved with the field of neuropsychology for many years, and have recently become more specifically involved with Division 40 activities (i.e, Task Force on Education, Credentialling, and Accreditation). I would like to increase my service to our wonderful field, and hope that you will provide me with this opportunity by serving as Division 40 Newsletter Editor.
Sincerely,
John DeLuca, Ph.D.
