Re: An Open Letter
Dear Friends:
I am writing this “open” letter for two reasons. First, I want to keep
you abreast of what has been going on in the
Division — and indeed a good bit has been going on, Second, I want
to bring to your attention some troubling
feedback.
Let me begin by first thanking each and everyone of you for the time
and effort that you put forth on behalf of
Division 40 activities. There is much that we can and should be doing,
but none of it would happen without your
“volunteer” commitment to furthering neuropsychology within the broader
scope of organized psychology
represented by APA. Indeed, increasing our involvement and representation
within APA has been part of the
Division?s long-range goal over the past five years. I am pleased to
say that we have made considerable strides in
this direction: we now have four seats on the APA Council; Manny Meier
served on the Joint Standards Committee
during the development of a revised Standards for Educational and Psychological
Testing: a neuropsychologist,
Abby Sivan, now sits on the central APA Ethics Committee; Tony Puente
and Stan Berent have become integral
players within the Practice Directorate, Bob Ivnik serves on the Task
Force for Test User Qualifications; Dan
Eubanks received an award from the Practice Directorate for his public
advocacy work; Ida Sue Baron is being
considered for a seat on the Board of Educational Affairs; Ida Sue
and Bob Elliott have both served on the APA CE
committee, and Mark Bondi has just begun a three year term on this
committee; and Tony Puente has sewed as
Program Chair for one of the recent past APA annual meetings. Neuropsychology
is having a presence within APA,
and APA is listening.
Within the past two months, the Science Advisory and the Practice Advisory
Committees, under the leadership of
Rus Bauer and Chris Grote, have reviewed the latest draft of the Test
Users Qualifications statement from the APA
Task Force on TUQ, and the Division has submitted a formal comment
to the Task Force. Rick Naugle and the
Ethics Committee has been in contact with the APA Ethics Committee
concerning the proposed revisions in the
APA Ethical Guidelines, and I have asked Rick and his committee to
collaborate with NAN on possibly drafting a
“joint”comment. As many of you know, Laird Cermak?s term as editor
of Neuropsychology is coming to an end,
and the APA Publications Committee has requested nominations from several
sources including the Division for a
future editor, which Jason Brandt is spearheading on behalf of the
Division (contact Jason if you have any
suggestions). Ida Sue Baron will be visiting the Practice Directorate
at my request to meet with individuals in the
Government Relations office to establish closer liaisons. Ida Sue has
also agreed to serve as Division 40?s
“observer” to the Council on the Advancement of Professional Psychology,
a step up from our previous status as a
“monitor” to this governance board that oversees the extra-professional
activities of the Practice Directorate.
Several other tasks are in the offing. I have asked Chris Grote and
the PAC to compile a list of all Medicare
regional carriers and their websites by the end of this year. The goal
is to have this list posted on the Division 40
website for
