Enter the sample subject searches below in the subject search box BUT before clicking on search, scroll to the bottom of the page and in the match on box select exact content. Here are some examples of subject and word or phrase searching (new terminology for keyword searching) to try:
| subject= feminism United States | word or phrase= comparable worth |
| subject = women in literature | word or phrase = womens liberation |
| subject = sex role | word or phrase = domestic violence |
| subject = afro american women | word or phrase = black women |
| subject = women social reformers | word or phrase = women and writers |
| subject = sexual harassment | word or phrase = women and science |
| subject = pay equity | word or phrase = gender and law |
-
Searching Hints:
Try your terms both as subject and word or phrase(new terminology for keyword searches).
- Women in LC's Terms: a Thesaurus of Library of Congress Subject Headings Relating to Women
Consult the Library of Congress Subject Headings.
This multivolume set is located at the Middleton Reference Desk. Ask to use it or ask a reference librarian for further assistance. Library of Congress subject headings have not and do not always use terms commonly used in the discipline of Women's Studies, so you have to be creative. You may also check this book for suggestions:
Z 695.1 W65 D53 1988
Try using AND in your word or phrase search.
If doing a word or phrase search with two or more terms without AND, the system looks for that as a PHRASE. Insert AND between the terms if you do not retrieve a large result.
Try your search without mentioning women.
For example: searching for material on physicians in general might yield items that discuss women physicians but the subject heading "women physicians" may not have been given to the work.
Because women's studies is so interdisciplinary, resources are located throughout the library at various call numbers pertaining to women in each area. HOWEVER, there are two areas of the call number system that do have many books on feminism and women's studies. They are the HQ1000s and the Z7960s. The HQs are books and journals on feminism and the Z7960s contain bibliographies on this topic which you can use these resources as a quick way to locate many citations on your topic.
Reference books represented by the prefix REF in front of the call number are also located in those call number ranges unless otherwise indicated. In Reference the Zs are in the back corner by the windows and the HQs are in the middle of the reference stacks. In the circulating collection, the Z7960s are on the 2nd floor in room 241. The HQs are on the third floor.
