ELECTRONIC INDEXES:

  • North American Women's Drama - a resource that brings together more than 1,500 plays and related biographical, production, and theatrical information. Spanning the colonial era through the twentieth century, this database offers many rare and out of print resources, many of which were previously unpublished.
  • North American Women's Letters and Diaries - this database represents the largest collection of women's diaries and correspondence ever assembled. It covers 300 years and over 1,300 women. Here, you can find journal articles, pamphlets, newsletters, monographs, and conference proceedings, as well as over 6,000 pages of previously unpublished materials.
  • Women and Social Movements 1600 - 2000 - intended to serve as a resource for students and scholars of U.S. history and U.S. women's history. Organized around the history of women in social movements in the U.S. between 1700 and 2000, the website seeks to advance scholarly debates and understanding at the same time that it makes the insights of women's history accessible to teachers and students at universities, colleges, and high schools.

Because women's and gender studies is so interdisciplinary, any of the general and subject electronic indexes and databases may be used depending upon the topic. The listing here indicates only a small number of the possible indexes that may be used.

Selected General Indexes:

  • Academic Search Complete - a full-text article database, known as the world's most valuable and comprehensive scholarly, multi-disciplinary database. This database offers material as far back as 1887 and as recently as 2009. Many of the sources found in this collection are unique to Academic Search Complete
  • LexisNexis Academic - full-text article database; particularly good for news, current events and legal information

  • America: History and Life - abstracted index to North American history, mediated access is available, click on link for details
  • Historical Abstracts - abstracted index to materials in world history exclusive of North America, mediated access is available, click on link for details
  • MLA International Bibliography - index to materials in languages and literature produced by the Modern Language Association.
Selected Art Resources:
  • ARTstor Digital Library [Women's Studies guide] - this database is a visual resource of value to scholars, teachers, and students. Several ARTstor collections will be of interest to those involved in Women's Studies. See this guide for more information on the collections that ARTstor now offers that are relevant to Women's Studies.
  • Art Abstracts - this database provides comprehensive indexing and abstracts for 378 leading international art publications, covering 1984-the present.

Lesbian Periodical Index

Indexes 42 lesbian periodicals between 1947-1985 that are rarely indexed elsewhere. Arranged by author and subject with separate sections for lesbian writings, book reviews, and visual art.


Anthologies By and About Women

Indexes English language anthology entries in all disciplines. Comprised of several indexes: subject/genre, keyword, contributor and author, and compiler of anthologies. Also lists tables of contents for each anthology indexed.


The Chicana Studies Index

Journal of Women's History Guide to Periodical Literature
