The Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) is an interagency committee that promotes the coordinated development, use, sharing, and dissemination of geospatial data on a national basis. This nationwide data publishing effort is known as the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI). The NSDI is a physical, organizational, and virtual network designed to enable the development and sharing of this nation's digital geographic information resources. FGDC activities are administered through the FGDC Secretariat, hosted by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The eAOC is a collection of geospatial data that has been determined to be relevant to air transportation on and near airports. Several techniques are used in obtaining these data, including ground survey, remote sensing , manual entry or calculated values. The types of information typically collected consist of reference data including runway and navaid information, data relating to imaginary surfaces that define safe altitudes for approaches and landings (Obstruction Identification Surfaces or OIS as specified in the FAA’s Federal Aviation Regulations Part 77) including obstacle and obstructing areas, layout of an airport including aircraft movement areas, and features found at and near an airport of landmark value.

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) has had a department-wide Geographical Information System (GIS) in place since 1994. The GIS Center provides support to all GIS users within LDEQ and constructs maps as requested by LDEQ personnel. The Center also maintains and develops GIS data sets for agency mapping requirements.
