Case 10: 1954 - 1975 |
Children's books of this period were more realistic; the romantic hero of previous years was vanishing. Authors wrote an increasing number of books with military themes and plots involving friendship between former enemies. The Civil Rights movement had a direct effect on publishing in later years, influencing the production of new books that focused on African-American men and women, portrayed as slaves, freemen, and soldiers.
