Since it was established in 1919, the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (MBMG) has fulfilled its mandate to collect and publish information on Montana’s geology to promote orderly and responsible development of the energy, ground-water, and mineral resources of the State. A non-regulatory state agency, the Bureau provides extensive advisory, technical, and informational services on the States’ geologic, mineral, energy, and water resources. Louisiana Geological Survey

Founded in 1934 by Act 131 of the Louisiana legislature, the Louisiana Geological Survey is the premier geological research institution in the state of Louisiana. Always housed on the beautiful campus of Louisiana State University, the LGS was originally part of the Louisiana Department of Conservation, later was a division of the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, and was transferred by the Louisiana legislature's HB 2353 to Louisiana State University, where it is today a component of the Office of Research and Economic Development. LSU's former Basin Research Institute is now the Basin Research Energy Section of the LGS.

Nebraska Geological Survey

More Information
Basic research on the state's geologic framework and history is the work of the Division's geologists. These duties include geologic mapping, studies or rock layers and structure, ancient environments and ancient life, as well as analysis of test drilling, geophysical data and minerals to help evaluate land and water resources. These studies determine factors influencing ancient and present environments and provide the basis for applied research such as natural-hazard mitigation, building-site evaluation and minerals exploration. The Division also maintains an extensive core and sediment sample inventory available for study.
