This archive includes all of the AAPG Bulletin issues from 1917 to the present and most AAPG Special Publications and Books. Founded in 1934 by Act 131 of the Louisiana legislature, the Louisiana Geological Survey is the premier geological research institution in the state of Louisiana. Always housed on the beautiful campus of Louisiana State University, the LGS was originally part of the Louisiana Department of Conservation, later was a division of the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, and was transferred by the Louisiana legislature's HB 2353 to Louisiana State University, where it is today a component of the Office of Research and Economic Development. The purpose of the UGA is to increase and disperse geological information to the scientific community, and promote public awareness of the usefulness of geology in general. The UGA does this through the voluntary efforts of its members by holding a monthly lunch meeting that includes a lecture, the yearly publication of a geologic guidebook, conducting a yearly field trip, and other educational activities.

Volcano Hazards Program

The overall objectives of the Volcano Hazards Program are to advance the scientific understanding of volcanic processes and to lessen the harmful impacts of volcanic activity. The Volcano Hazards Program monitors active and potentially active volcanoes, assesses their hazards, responds to volcanic crises, and conducts research on how volcanoes work to fulfill a Congressional mandate (P.L. 93-288) that the USGS issue "timely warnings" of potential volcanic hazards to responsible emergency-management authorities and to the populace affected. Thus, in addition to obtaining the best possible scientific information, the program works to effectively communicate its scientific findings to authorities and the public in an appropriate and understandable form.
