Science Citation Index is a multi-disciplinary index, including citation
index, to international journal literature in the fields of science, technology,
and biomedicine. Subject areas include natural and physical sciences, earth
and environmental sciences, life sciences, agriculture, chemistry, medicine,
engineering and applied sciences, computer applications and cybernetics,
and materials science. The databases begins with 1988, and is updated bi-monthly.

Search Fields |
Searching
SCI will automatically begin in Search mode, with Title Search as
the default. Other searchable fields include Author, Cited Reference, Address,
Abbreviated Journal Title and Full Journal Title; you can change fields
to search by pressing Alt-F. To return to searching from anywhere
in the program, press F3.
Important searching operations:

To change searchable field to one of the following: Basic
Index, Title word, Author Keyword, ABstract, Author name, Citation (cited
author/reference), ADdress, Abbreviated Journal title, Full journal title,
Set combination. |
| Alt-D |
Invokes a dictionary to check the spelling or appropriate
abbreviation of your search terms, to verify a source or cited author name,
or to pull terms directly into your search statement. |
| Alt-L |
Limits your search result to a specific language, document
type, or year. To remove these limits from succeeding searches, press Alt-L
again. |
| Alt-S |
Save a strategy for later use. Put a floppy diskette in
the a: drive, and you will be prompted to type in the drive and name you
wish to called your saved strategy. You can then retrieve this strategy
for later use by pressing Alt-R (for Run Strategy) |
| Truncation |
Use * for both right-handed and internal truncation of search
terms. |
| and, or, not |
Combine search terms or set numbers with and, or, not |
Displaying
| F4 |
Display records by highlighting the search and pressing
F4. To see a full bibliographic citation press R; for titles only press
T. |
| Related Records |
Press R to see articles that have one or more cited references
in common with the article currently being displayed. (Related Records
exist only in relation to another record, and can include articles you
would not otherwise find. |
| Cited References |
Press F to see articles cited within the displayed article.
The citation(s) will appear in an abbreviated form on a smaller, superimposed,
screen. |
| Collected Records |
To mark records for later display, Press C (Collected),
then R (Record), then S (Set). To display these collected records press
F4, then C for Collection Records or O for Collection Titles. |
| Set field |
Combine previously executed searches (including searches
using different fields) by using the Set field. Press Alt-F then S. You
can combine search sets with AND and broaden them by using the word THRU,
e.g., 1 thru 5 is the same as 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 |
Printing/Downloading
| Printing |
From a record or title display, Press P to display the print
menu, then press P again to select the record(s) you want to print. |
| Downloading |
Press F to specify the format of your final file. Highlight
you choice from the file format menu and press [enter] Press D to display
the drives/paths menu, and highlight A: and press [enter]. Press [enter]
at the main save menu to begin saving records.You will be prompted to enter
a file name. |
Exiting
Press F5 and then Q for Quit.
