Click here for a list of databases in the biological sciences. You must be affiliated with the university to access them from off-campus. Instructions for off-campus access are provided. Members of the public may access them by visiting the Middleton Library.
BIODIDAC:
Directory of digital resources (images, power point presentations, etc) for teaching the biological sciences.
Bioline International:
Open access database of peer-reviewed biology journals primarily from developing countries, particularly those in the Southern hemisphere.
Biology Browser:
Reference sources in the biological sciences (such as thesauri, etc) and links to relevant news articles, outside websites, etc.
Intute: Health and Life Sciences:
Searchable catalog of selected internet resources in the biological sciences, published by the University of Nottingham (UK), particularly strong in the health sciences.
National Biological Information Infrastructure:
Collection of biological (primarily plant and animal ecology) information, including sections on current biological issues, geographic and discipline-based indexes, and indexes of online references sources and related organizations.
PLoS Biology:
Open access full text peer-reviewed journal from the Public Library of Science.
AmphibiaWeb:
Database of information on amphibians worldwide, including a country index, and articles on the decline of amphibians.
Animal Info.org:
Information on Endangered Species. Includes a species index, a group index (ie. Cats), a country index (listing endangered species by country), a listing of the world's rarest mammals, and links to animal organizations, web sites, and publications.
Animal Diversity Web:
Information on many different animal species, includes pictures and sound files.
Biodiversity Hotspots:
Information on specific ecological communities with high biodiversity and/or that are highly threatened.
Biologia Centrali-Americana:
Online version of the entire run of the out-of-print journal Biologia Centrali-Americana covering the discoveries of the late 1800s and early 1900s describing the fauna of Central America.
BugGuide.net:
Information and pictures relating to insects (as well as spiders, centipedes, and scorpions) native to the US and Canada.
Integrated Taxonomic Information System:
Taxonomic information for plants, animals, fungi, and microbes, as well as references for more information on each species.
BioTech:
Reference site in the life sciences, strong in the areas biochemistry and biotechnology. Includes professional (job-related) resources and reference tools such as dictionaries and web guides.
Cells Alive!:
Collection of pictures and video files of live cells, with information in the fields of cell biology, microbiology, immunology, and microscopy, and links to external resources.
DOEGenomes:
US Department of Energy genetics site. Includes information on the Human Genome Project, as well as images, resources for teachers, and a section on ethics in genetic research.
