Greetings! Welcome to the VM committee descriptions page. Listed below are the current committees operating in the Section. We've added a brief description of what each committee does, who is the current chair, and who are the current committee members. In all too many cases there are no names in the committee members column.

One of the intended purposes of this page is to allow interested Section members to learn about the various standing committees, what they do, and what might be asked of committee members. It is our great hope that we will be able to fill all of the committee positions.

Please take a look below to see where you would be interested in serving. It does require a bit of time but the return greatly exceeds the investment!

Advanced
Workshop
Committee
The Advanced Workshop Committee is charged with the task of identifying areas of interest to VM membership and the larger archival world that exceed basic or introductory level information about visual materials, finding appropriate instructors for the topic, coordinating pre-conference and other workshops with SAA Education Office, and tracking the outcome of the offering.
Committee Chair Ardys Kozbial
Committee Members Stephen Cohen, Yale University
Sean Fisher, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation
Megan Friedel, Massachusetts Historical Society
Paula Mangiafico, Duke University

Bibliography
Committee
The Bibliography Committee is charged with the task of maintaining and updating the VM Section's Selected Bibliography for Visual Materials Archivists. The Bibliography Committee Chair invites any interested VM members to participate in this valuable and expanding resource as it is periodically reviewed, edited, and updated. Topics for discussion at the Mid-Winter Meeting may include: Bibliography organization and presentation; New subject areas; Limits on scope (or not); Sources for new titles; Formatting for web.
Committee Chair The Bibliography Committee is chaired by John Slate, CA
Committee Members Open. If you are interested in working on the Bibliography Committee, please contact John Slate, CA

Elections/Nominating
Committee
The Elections/Nominating Committee is charged with the task of seeking out interested and qualified Section members to run for the Chair-Elect position. Most of the work takes place in the late winter/early spring so that the candidates' statements can appear in the Special issue of Views.
Committee Chair The Elections/Nominating Committee is always chaired by the outgoing Section Chair, currently Mark E. Martin .
Committee Members Martha Mahard, Mark E. Martin. Please contact Mark E. Martin if you are interested in working on the election/nominating committee.

Newsletter
Committee
The newsletter falls under the broader Publications committee. The Newsletter Committee is charged with the task of gathering information for the Section newsletter and formatting it for publication three times per year (December, April, and August) plus one special ballot and t-shirt edition (June).

This committee has been more or less dormant for a number of years. The goal is to have the committee serve as an editorial board with each member responsible for the information in a particular area, to be determined. Examples might be regional news, books, exhibitions, conservation, and collections.

Once the current Views indexing project is completed, a member of this committee would take the lead in indexing recent issues (on a monthly or annual basis is to be determined).

Although the newsletter already is a regular publication of the Section, with the advent of sole publication electronically, there is potential for the newsletter to be expanded.

Committee Chair The Newsletter Committee is chaired by Laurie A. Baty, CA.
Committee Members Open. Please contact Laurie A. Baty, CA if you are interested in working on the newsletter.

Programs
Committee
The Programs Committee is charged with the task of seeking program proposals for the SAA Annual conference, coördinating the review of submissionss, and getting a "rank ordered" list of those submissions to SAA HQ in a timely manner.
Committee Chair The Programs Committee is chaired by Miriam Meislik.
Committee Members The Program Committee always has the current Section Chair and Chair-elect as members. Currently, committee membership is: Sue Kriegsman, Mark Martin, John Slate

Publications
Committee
This is a committee the Section has indicated an interest in having, but it's not been active. The Committee should be considering publications that the Section might have an interest in being created. For example, the Section might have played a role in the revision of SAA's Administration of Photographic Collections, the revision of which was just received by the SAA Publications Board. The Museum Archives Section actually wrote the new manual on Museum Archives. What might the VM Section want to undertake? One possibility is a electronic, juried journal dealing with photographic issues (history, administration, etc.) This committee has the potential for being very visible and active.
Committee Chair The Publications Committee is chaired by Laurie A. Baty, CA.
Committee Members Open. Please contact Laurie A. Baty, CA if you are interested in working on publications.

Three-year Plan
Committee
The Three-year Plan Committee is charged with the task of revising the three-year plan and creating a summary for submission to the Section Chair. The Section Chair reviews these documents and submits them to SAA Council.

At last year's Mid-winter meeting all attendees acted as a committee of the whole to review the three-year plan. This worked rather well and will be applied at this year's Mid-winter meeting. Should this process prove viable the Section will discuss building this into the review and submission process.

Committee Chair The Three-year Plan Committee is chaired by the vice-chair/chair-elect, currently James Eason.
Committee Members Open. Please contact James Eason if you are interested in working on the three-year plan.

Web Site
Committee
The Web Site Committee is charged with the task of maintaining current Web pages, creating new pages as needed, and coöperating with other committees - such as the Views indexing committee - to get new work on the Web site.

There is currently much discussion regarding moving all SAA Section and Roundtable Web sites to the SAA HQ server. The positive aspect of this is that it would make changing Web Weavers easier as the new Weaver would not have to have the Section Web site on the Weaver's local server. On the negative side, all Web sites on the SAA HQ server must look alike by using SAA style sheets.

In the past few years the committee has been composed entirely of the Chair. There is great potential here to branch out and create areas for regional news, updating the links pages, and expanding the site to include more members' items.

Committee Chair The Web Site Committee is chaired by Mark E. Martin.
Committee Members Open. Please contact Mark E. Martin if you are interested in working on the Web committee.

Website Images
Policies and Guidelines
Committee
The Website Images Policies and Guidelines Committee acts as a source of information regarding the publishing and use of images on the World Wide Web for the archival community. Its goal is to provide information regarding how to place images on the web, how to protect images placed on the web, policies regarding images for web use and guidelines for accomplishing these tasks. This committee will maintain a Web page containing this information. The Section Web Weaver will add to the Section site as needed.
Committee Chair The Website Images Policies and Guidelines Committee is chaired by Miriam Meislik.
Committee Members Open. Please contact Miriam Meislik if you are interested in working on the Website Images Policies and Guidelines Committee.

Please feel free to contact Mark E. Martin, current web weaver for the Section, with any questions or
