Gulf Oil Spill Scientific Symposium - Consortium for Ocean Leadership

The BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill is having significant ecological impacts on the Gulf of Mexico and coastal states in the region. As the nation responds to this unprecedented spill, non-federal scientists can play a major role in the efforts to understand and combat the impacts of this spill. The Consortium for Ocean Leadership is hosting this symposium to identify for the federal agencies the existing gaps in the scientific knowledge; opportunities to fill those gaps; and priorities for short- and long-term research needs to understand the impact of the spill on the Gulf ecosystems and human health. Ocean Leadership is working with NOAA and other government organizations as partners of this event. June 2-3

Oil Contamination & Seafood Safety

In response to consumer concerns about oil contaminated seafood from the Gulf of Mexico reaching the marketplace, Louisiana Sea Grant has produced a short video outlining the precautions taken to ensure tainted shell and finfish don't end up on the table. Media outlets wanting a copy of the video, or the audio file, should contact Roy Kron at rkron@lsu.edu. Several Louisiana Sea Grant personnel also have been trained to detect oil contaminated seafood and are available for interviews.

Oil Spill Academic Task Force (OSATF)

The Oil Spill Academic Task Force (OSATF) is a consortium of scientists and scholars from institutions in the State University System as well as from four of Florida’s private universities working in collaboration with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). The OSATF brings together expertise and resources to assist the state of Florida and the Gulf region in preparing for and responding to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
