BP Oil Disaster: Resources and Benefit Events | WWOZ 90.7 FM
More Information
On April 20, 2010, an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig (leased by British Petroleum) set off an historic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, just off the Louisiana coast. While BP and government cleanup efforts are ongoing, many musicians, artists, organizations, and businesses are doing their part to help out.
Below is a continually updated list of Gulf Coast relief benefit events in the Greater New Orleans area. Please email events@wwoz.org to add more to our list. Read on to find out what else you can do to help combat this growing ecological and environmental crisis.
Colbert Nation Gulf of America Fund
More Information
The catastrophe resulting from the oil rig explosion spreads across the southeast. What’s more, scientists say the swift gulf currents could move oil to sensitive coral reefs on Key West, then 100 miles per day up the Atlantic coast, which is as rich with sea life as the Gulf of Mexico.
Stephen Colbert and his generous fans are supporting relief efforts. The host of the Colbert Report and leader of the Colbert Nation, along with Bing.com have begun the effort with a $100,000 commitment to a new charitable fund - THE COLBERT NATION GULF OF AMERICA FUND. This fund will be used for general relief. From it, grants will be made to nonprofits that work directly to help the people and wildlife affected by this oil spill.

Gulf Future Campaign - GulfFuture.org
More Information
Gulf Future is a collaborative effort to raise awareness and increase public support for the communities along the Gulf coast affected by the BP oil drilling disaster. This campaign is the brainchild of the Gulf Coast Fund and the Gulf Restoration Network. In May, several folks from our two organizations took a tour of the devastation developing in the Gulf of Mexico and along the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Outraged and distressed by what we saw, and anticipating what the future might hold for these communities, GRN and GCF realized that nothing short of a nation-wide outcry about this catastrophe was necessary.
Thus the Gulf Future Campaign was formed. Our vision is a to mobilize supporters from across the nation to show their solidarity with the people of the Gulf Coast.

When a disaster occurs, people want to help. Often, this is exactly what is needed in a crisis. However, sometimes the presence of untrained people, however well-meaning, really does not help, and it can even make things worse. This is especially true in the case of an oil spill. Learn More...
SCHOLR (Student Coalition to Help the Oil Leak Relief) @ LSU Facebook Group
More Information
A group of student organizations on LSU's campus got together to determine what role our organizations, as well as the LSU student community, can play in providing relief efforts for the recent oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. The purpose of this group is to provide accurate information regarding the series of events that led up to the leak, up to date information on the status of the leak and coastal Louisiana environment, inform students of volunteer opportunities, as well as provide a network for students to communicate and announce their efforts. Founded in 1999 by environmental attorney and activist Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and several veteran Waterkeepers, Waterkeeper Alliance is a global movement of on-the-water advocates who patrol and protect over 100,000 miles of rivers, streams and coastlines in North and South America, Europe, Australia, Asia and Africa.
Waterkeepers combine firsthand knowledge of their waterways with an unwavering commitment to the rights of their communities and to the rule of law. Whether they’re on the water tracking down polluters, in a courtroom advocating for stronger enforcement of environmental laws, in a town meeting rallying community support, or in a classroom educating young people, Waterkeepers defend their communities against anyone who threatens their right to clean water—from law-breaking polluters to unresponsive government agencies.
