America's Wetland

More Information
America's WETLAND is one of the largest and most productive expanses of coastal wetlands in North America. This valuable landscape extending along Louisiana's coast is disappearing at a rate of 25 square miles per year. In the largest public awareness initiative in its history, Louisiana is leading America's WETLAND: Campaign to Save Coastal Louisiana. The America's WETLAND Foundation through the Campaign is raising awareness of the impact of Louisiana's wetland loss and increase support for efforts to conserve and save coastal Louisiana.

Deep Water: The Gulf Oil Disaster and the Future of Offshore Drilling - Recommendations by National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling

More Information
Those recommendations are presented in the spirit of transforming America into the global leader for safe and effective offshore drilling operations. Just as this Commission learned from the experiences of other nations in developing our recommendations, the lessons learned from the Deepwater Horizon disaster are not confined to our own government and industry, but relevant to rest of the world. We wish we could say that our recommendations make a recurrence of a disaster like the Macondo blowout impossible. We do not have that power. No one can eliminate all risks associated with deepwater exploration. But when exploration occurs, particularly in sensitive environments like the Gulf of Mexico or the Arctic, the country has an obligation to make responsible decisions regarding the benefits and risks.

Deep Water: The Gulf Oil Disaster and the Future of Offshore Drilling - Report to the President

More Information
On May 22, 2010, President Barack Obama announced the creation of the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling: an independent, nonpartisan entity, directed to provide a thorough analysis and impartial judgment. The President charged the Commission to determine the causes of the disaster, and to improve the country’s ability to respond to spills, and to recommend reforms to make offshore energy production safer. And the President said we were to follow the facts wherever they led.  This report is the result of an intense six-month effort to fulfill the President’s charge.

GeoPlatform - Gulf Response

More Information
The dynamic nature of the BP oil spill has been a challenge for a range of communities – from hotel operators to fishermen to local community leaders. We know the American people have questions about how the federal government is responding to this crisis, and we are committed to providing the answers with clarity and transparency. The site you’re viewing right now is a symbol of that commitment. GeoPlatform.gov/gulfresponse is a new online tool that provides you with near-real time information about the response effort. Developed by NOAA with the EPA, U.S. Coast Guard, and the Department of Interior, the site offers you a “one-stop shop” for spill response information. The site integrates the latest data the federal responders have about the oil spill’s trajectory with fishery area closures, wildlife data and place-based Gulf Coast resources — such as pinpointed locations of oiled shoreline and current positions of deployed research ships — into one customizable interactive map.

Gulf Future Campaign - GulfFuture.org

More Information
Gulf Future is a collaborative effort to raise awareness and increase public support for the communities along the Gulf coast affected by the BP oil drilling disaster. This campaign is the brainchild of the Gulf Coast Fund and the Gulf Restoration Network. In May, several folks from our two organizations took a tour of the devastation developing in the Gulf of Mexico and along the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Outraged and distressed by what we saw, and anticipating what the future might hold for these communities, GRN and GCF realized that nothing short of a nation-wide outcry about this catastrophe was necessary. Thus the Gulf Future Campaign was formed. Our vision is a to mobilize supporters from across the nation to show their solidarity with the people of the Gulf Coast.

LA Bucket Brigade

More Information
The Louisiana Bucket Brigade is a 501(c)(3) environmental health and justice organization working with communities that neighbor the state's oil refineries and chemical plants. The EPA-approved “bucket" is a simple, community friendly tool that fenceline neighbors use to take air samples. We complement the community group by adding a level of technical expertise to their work. We provide this tool and training to community members to monitor and expose industrial pollution as it happens. We assist residents in their fight to reduce pollution and protect public health. We work with community groups to help them take air samples and achieve their goals, be it relocation away from a polluting facility, reduced pollution, or a moratorium on facility expansions. The more evidence the communities gather, the more power they have to attain their goals.

Mission Without A Map: The Politics and Policies of Restoration Following The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill: 1989-2002

More Information
This history of the settlement, damage assessment, and restoration following the Exxon Valdez oil spill was researched, written and designed by Joe Hunt. It does not necessarily reflect the views of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council, the Restoration Office, or the associated state and federal agencies. Mission Without A Map is a documented history of the Trustee Council, derived mostly from the public record. It was first inspired as a means of digesting an enormous administrative record into a readable format, so that future administrators, scientists, and scholars hoping to learn from the Exxon Valdez restoration experience have a basis to begin their research.

This section includes the data as well as the sampling and monitoring programs and plans. Please note that much of this sampling and monitoring is being undertaken for the purpose of the response. Plans and techniques are based on needs and may change with changing incident management circumstances. Conditions encountered in the field may necessitate deviation from an event-specific plan to ensure collection of reliable data. Additionally, it is important to note that there are other agencies and organizations collecting data which is not directed by BP. That data is not discussed in this summary. Results and plans will be updated as they become available.

NOAA | Aerial Observations of Oil at Sea

More Information
During the initial phases of an oil spill response, information about the release is often extremely sketchy. Although various types of remote sensing techniques are available for detecting and mapping oil distribution, the most reliable technique is visual observations from aircraft. These observations are used by the response team to forecast subsequent oil movement, implement appropriate oil spill countermeasures, and inform the wider response community of the present status of pollution distribution.

Oil-Spill Risk Analysis: Contingency Planning Statistics for ...

More Information
The Federal Government offers U.S. Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) lands in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) for oil and gas leasing. Because oil spills may occur from activities associated with offshore oil exploration, production, and transportation resulting from these lease sales, the Minerals Management Service (MMS) has conducted a formal oil-spill risk analysis (OSRA) to provide spill statistics that can be used in contingency planning for these areas. This report summarizes the results of that analysis, the objective of which was to estimate the risk of oil-spill contact to coastal resources in the GOM from oil spills accidentally occurring from the OCS activities (LaBelle, 2001).

It included scientists from diverse disciplines and federal, academic, and nongovernmental organizations. The SSWG was not to conduct a scientific investigation, but to provide rapid scientific assessment of potential consequences of the spill that could provide usable knowledge to decision-makers.
