Vision: The Acadiana RC&D Council's vision is to address the social, environmental and economical concerns of South Central Louisiana. Its primary focus is on the conservation, development and utilization of natural resources. The Resource Conservation and Development Program (RC&D) is a voluntary program that helps people protect and develop their economic, natural, and social resources. The program is administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), in cooperation with other USDA agencies. RC&D objectives focus on improving the quality of life of residents in designated regions. The RC&D program unites people at a grass-roots level, relying on volunteers and civic leaders to revitalize and build communities through cooperative projects.

America's WETLAND is one of the largest and most productive expanses of coastal wetlands in North America. This valuable landscape extending along Louisiana's coast is disappearing at a rate of 25 square miles per year. In the largest public awareness initiative in its history, Louisiana is leading America's WETLAND: Campaign to Save Coastal Louisiana. The America's WETLAND Foundation through the Campaign is raising awareness of the impact of Louisiana's wetland loss and increase support for efforts to conserve and save coastal Louisiana.

The Louisiana Bucket Brigade is a 501(c)(3) environmental health and justice organization working with communities that neighbor the state's oil refineries and chemical plants. The EPA-approved “bucket" is a simple, community friendly tool that fenceline neighbors use to take air samples. We complement the community group by adding a level of technical expertise to their work. We provide this tool and training to community members to monitor and expose industrial pollution as it happens. We assist residents in their fight to reduce pollution and protect public health. We work with community groups to help them take air samples and achieve their goals, be it relocation away from a polluting facility, reduced pollution, or a moratorium on facility expansions. The more evidence the communities gather, the more power they have to attain their goals.

In the wake of the BP Oil Spill that is threatening our coast, local, regional and national conservation organizations are coordinating volunteers to assist in local, state and federal recovery efforts in Louisiana.
Our organizations - including the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program, the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, the National Audubon Society, the National Wildlife Federation and The Nature Conservancy - are established, active advocates for the preservation and restoration of coastal Louisiana.
We are organizations with a history of on-the-ground work in Louisiana, and we are combining efforts and experience to implement an effective volunteer response and make a real difference in the BP Oil Spill recovery efforts.

LSU Joins Consortium to Study, Minimize Effects of Gulf Oil Spill

LSU has signed a Memorandum of Understanding, or MOU, with The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, or WHOI, and the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium, or LUMCON, to form a consortium called the Gulf Oil Research Program, or GORP.
According to the MOU, the purpose of the consortium is to work cooperatively to plan, secure funding for, execute and report on a program of scientific research to describe and quantify the effects of the oil spill on varied environments, communities and species in the affected region, and to develop and implement remediations where feasible.

In response to consumer concerns about oil contaminated seafood from the Gulf of Mexico reaching the marketplace, Louisiana Sea Grant has produced a short video outlining the precautions taken to ensure tainted shell and finfish don't end up on the table. Media outlets wanting a copy of the video, or the audio file, should contact Roy Kron at rkron@lsu.edu. Several Louisiana Sea Grant personnel also have been trained to detect oil contaminated seafood and are available for interviews.

Oil from the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico is causing concern among cattle owners who graze their herds on coastal marshes.
The fear is that severe weather or high tides could push the oil inland.
“They are worried in case of a hurricane the oil could be pushed up into the canals. Then we’ve got cattle drinking from those canals,” said Andrew Granger, LSU AgCenter county agent in Vermilion Parish.
