Google Book Search

More Information
Book Search works just like web search. Try a search on Google Books or on Google.com. When they find a book with content that contains a match for your search terms, they'll link to it in your search results. If the book is out of copyright, or the publisher has given them permission, you'll be able to see a preview of the book, and in some cases the entire text. If it's in the public domain, you're free to download a PDF copy. They've created reference pages for every book so you can quickly find all kinds of relevant information: book reviews, web references, maps and more. See an example. If you find a book you like, click on the "Buy this book" and "Borrow this book" links to see where you can buy or borrow it.

NOAA | Aerial Observations of Oil at Sea

More Information
During the initial phases of an oil spill response, information about the release is often extremely sketchy. Although various types of remote sensing techniques are available for detecting and mapping oil distribution, the most reliable technique is visual observations from aircraft. These observations are used by the response team to forecast subsequent oil movement, implement appropriate oil spill countermeasures, and inform the wider response community of the present status of pollution distribution.

OAIster

More Information
OAIster serves as a search portal for digital collections of electronic books, online journals, audio and image files, and movies provided by the research library community. Users can search by keyword, title, creator, subject or resource type, and searches yield a detailed and well-organized description of the resource and a link to the resource itself. Indexed content includes the Library of Congress' American Memory Project, various pre-print and e-print servers, and digital thesis and dissertation collections. Currently OAIster contains over a 1.7 million records harvested from over 200 institutions. OAIster increases the visibility and accessibility of these unique resources by providing a 'broad, generic, information retrieval resource for information about publicly available digital library resources' via a single point of entry--"Best Free Reference Web Sites 2003," RUSA Quarterly, Fall 2003; reviewed March 5, 2003.

Scenario-Building for the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

More Information
In May 2010, the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) established a Strategic Sciences Working Group (SSWG) to assess how the Deepwater Horizon (DH) oil spill may impact the ecology, economy, and people of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). It included scientists from diverse disciplines and federal, academic, and nongovernmental organizations. The SSWG was not to conduct a scientific investigation, but to provide rapid scientific assessment of potential consequences of the spill that could provide usable knowledge to decision-makers.
