SEARCHING FOR MUSIC USING THE ONLINE CATALOG

HOW TO EXCLUDE MATERIALS BY FORMAT

The new online catalog does not support the "not" operator to exclude materials by FORMAT.

Other ways to exclude materials must be found.

EXAMPLE: I want all the information about Mozart's "Magic Flute" that is not a sound recording (i.e., I want books, journals, monographs, scores, but not CDs or LPs.)

In the old online catalog I would do this:
k = (mozart and zauberflote) not sound

Is there a way to EXCLUDE records by format in the new online catalog?

SOLUTION:

In this case you want PRINT materials only. One way to limit, or exclude materials, is to consider location. Think of where the print materials are housed in Music Resources (which is called "Stacks") and limit by LOCATION. Here is how:

exclude1
exclude2

Why does it work? Audio visual items are kept in "RESTRICTED" location, print materials are kept in "STACKS."

This is a wonderful and powerful searching tool, but you will have to THINK AND SEARCH CREATIVELY.
