1. YOU MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING before music examples can be added to your
Semester Book:
- A Semester Book account on your Paws account.
- Semester Book training given by Computing Services (578-0100)
- A list of URLs. The first thing to do is to request us to prepare the sound files.
There are two ways to do ths. First, you may submit a
request for items to be digitized for
Semester Book by using the form found on the
Music Resources website
(see the blue arrow below).
The second way to request this service is to email or hand-deliver your
request to Music Resources. When the sound files are ready, we will send a notification
with the URLS to your PAWS account.
2. GETTING STARTED ADDING MUSIC EXAMPLES TO YOUR SEMESTER BOOK.
There are many ways to accomplish this. I am describing the method I have found
to be the easiest for me. Here is the process I use:
- Log onto your PAWS account.
- Open a second window in your internet browser.
- On Music Resources computers, click on the "NEW" icon found on the
right side of the top toolbar.
- On many computers, you can click on the icon for opening Internet Explorer or Netscape, and
a second window will open. This icon may be on your desktop or on the toolbar at the
bottom of the screen.
- Log into your PAWS account again in the newly opened window. You will have your PAWS
account visible in both windows.
- Display the email message with the URLs from your PAWS account in one window.
- Display your Semester Book program in the second window.
3. FOLDERS AND MUSICAL EXAMPLES IN SEMESTER BOOK
- In order to organize your materials, you'll want to put them in "folders" in Semester
Book.
To do this, click on MATERIALS

and then click on CREATE MATERIAL FOLDERS.
This screen provides a box for the
folder name. Press the CREATE button when you are finished. (see below)

- To add music urls to the folder, click on MATERIALS again, then click on CREATE MATERIALS.
- The resulting screen will be the template for entering the information for your first
music example. (see below)

- Using the drop down menu, choose the folder name you just created, add the title [and composer] of the
piece as you want it listed,
then highlight the course number. (see example below)

- Scroll down in SB (Semester Book). You will see four boxes that can be filled in.
IGNORE THE FIRST THREE,
("Comments," "Display From," "Display To") and proceed
to the box entitled "URL" (see example below)

4. INPUTTING URLS
- Open the other browser window and look at the email message from "Digital M Library."
- Open the attachment called "Recordings.html."
- Highlight and copy the URL for the selection you are needing, either the entire work or
the selection you need. Use the "copy" icon (or control-c) to copy the url.

- Paste the url into the box in your SB account and press the "URL" button (See
example below). BEWARE THAT
YOU DO NOT PRESS THE "INPUT" BUTTON, YOU'LL HAVE TO DELETED THIS EXAMPLE AND BEGIN AGAIN.
5. Checking your work
- After you have pressed the URL button, you will be taken to the list of selections you have on
your SB account. Click on the one you just entered.
...and you will see this. Click on the URL hotlink to get to the next step.
- Now click on the speaker icon (follow red arrow) for the
entire work, or the individual movements (blue pointers) for a selection.
- You are almost finished checking your work! The screen you'll see next is your RealPlayer
program. This may be an older version than yours, but it will be similar. Click the green arrow
button icon which looks like this:
- Then if you have your speaker(s) turned on and if you have taken the "mute" off the
audio function on your computer, you should be able to hear that selection.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
RETURN TO TOP
1. QUESTION:
When my students click on a link, they get the message,
"This page cannot be displayed." I cut and pasted the URLs from the automated message I got
concerning these URLs, so I don't see how I could have made a typo. What could be wrong?
ANSWER:
Click on MATERIALS and then VIEW MATERIALS. Click
on the class number (MUS 1111, e.g.) and then open one of the music selections. You will see
this screen (without the red arrow):
CLICK on "Edit" (see red arrow) and you'll be able to make changes to your entry. Scroll down to the
URL, put your cursor IN the URL and go to the very beginning of the URL. IF THERE IS A SPACE
before the "APPL" in the URL, remove it. Scroll down further and hit "SAVE."
WHY DID THIS HAPPEN?
The
automated message you received from the Digital Audio Library with the URLs in it INCLUDES this
extra space. You wouldn't notice it unless you are looking for it, so before you save each of these URLs,
check to see if there is an extra space in front of the url.
2. QUESTION:
I just input
all the information for a listening example, the title, course number and URL. I clicked save,
then I went back to check it. The title is there and the course number, but there is NO URL!
Where is it? What happened?
ANSWER:
The problem is that you click "INPUT" instead of
"URL."
HOW DO I FIX IT?
You have to delete the record and
re-input it. Click "edit" (as seen in the answer to #1), go to the bottom of the screen and
click on "delete." BUT DON'T STOP THERE! You will see what looks like the "edit" page again,
at this point, scroll to the bottom again, and click on "YES" when you see this:
Now you start over and re-input the selection, just be sure to click "URL" instead of "INPUT."
