YP (Young Peoples') Collection
The YP Collection contains representative examples of children's and young adult literature for grades K-12. The collection is classed according to the Dewey Decimal Classification system; however, the picture book collection is classed "Easy" and arranged alphabetically by author.
The YP collection contains many award-winning books such as the Newbery, Caldecott, American Library Association Notable Children's Books, American Library Association Best Books for Young Adults, the New York Times Best Illustrated, and the Coretta Scott King Award. The Newbery (green and yellow tape on spine), the Caldecott (red and yellow tape on spine), and the Coretta Scott King (blue and red tape on spine) award books are shelved apart from the YP collection in alphabetical order by title. The other award titles are shelved within the YP collection.
Other special items in the YP collection include the Foreign Language Children's Literature Collection, currently comprised of French, German, Spanish, and Russian. These, along with the main YP Collection, are classed according to the Dewey Decimal system, with the exception of the Award Winners, as stated above. The YP Collection supports the children's and young adult literature classes, reading methods/materials, student teaching, classes in Library and Information Science, and the foreign language programs.
