Under the supervision of the Coordinator of Special Collections Technical Services, this Library Associate 2 position requires problem solving and independent judgment in applying knowledge of both general and highly specialized library policies and procedures, including appropriate preservation techniques for rare library materials. The incumbent is responsible for processing state documents and other materials in the Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley Collections and for a program of stacks management for all of Special Collections’ holdings.
40% Performs physical processing of published materials into the collections, primarily state documents received through the State Documents Repository Program but may also assist with processing LLMVC materials. Includes evaluating preservation needs of publications, determining and applying appropriate housing, and related tasks.
35% Manages a program of stacks maintenance for published materials in Special Collections, including Hill Memorial Library and Compact shelving. Includes space planning, allocation and management for incoming and existing materials; shifting collections; transferring items to Compact in consultation with the Coordinator of Technical Services and the Assistant Curator for Books; maintenance of call number order; and tracking of missing items. Also carries out stacks related special projects.
10% Maintains ephemera collections in LLMVC, University Archives, and other collecting areas as appropriate, including housing, preservation, description, and maintenance of relevant finding aids.
10% Works at the Special Collections public service desks, assisting patrons in using library resources. Interprets and enforces library policies for the security and administration of the collections.
5% Other duties as assigned.
Required: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; high level of attention to detail; ability to work independently and as part of a team; and knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
Preferred: One to three years of experience working in an academic library, including cataloging, physical processing and preservation, stacks maintenance, or reference/public service work; knowledge of MARC and AACR2 or RDA; experience working with OCLC and SIRSI (or another integrated library system); experience with state documents or special collections library materials.
Special: Willingness and ability to lift 20 pounds.
