Graduate Assistant
NEH Digitization Grant “Free People of Color in Louisiana: Revealing an Unknown Past”
Duration: August 2013 through July 2014

The LSU Libraries’ Special Collections division seeks a Graduate Assistant to work 20 hours per week on the project “Free People of Color in Louisiana: Revealing an Unknown Past” funded by a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant. This two-year project will digitize and catalog approximately 27,000 pages of print and microfilm materials from four different archives in Louisiana. The resulting collection will be available in the LOUISiana Digital Library: http://www.louisianadigitallibrary.org

The primary responsibility of the GA will be to digitize and create metadata for documents located at Tulane University, the Louisiana State Museum, and the Historic New Orleans Collection. The incumbent will work closely with the Project  Librarian and the project partners in New Orleans to meet all project deadlines and manage the project workflow.  He/She will also assist with project documentation (reports and statistics) and project publicity.

This position is located in New Orleans.

Requirements:  Bachelor’s degree; currently enrolled full-time at LSU for Fall 2013 semester as a graduate student in good standing; ability to work independently, keep accurate records, and meet deadlines; attention to detail.  Travel within New Orleans to three different institutions is also required.

Preferred:  Experience with digitization and related software applications; knowledge of DACS and archival theory; experience processing and describing archival collections; reading competency in French; knowledge of Louisiana and/or African American history. 

This position is a graduate assistantship with a 12-month appointment, with potential for one year renewal.   Annual salary $14,400 plus standard benefits associated with an LSU graduate assistantship, including tuition remission.
