Position Description: Graduate Assistant, Cataloging Department

The LSU Libraries seeks to hire an energetic applicant for the position of Graduate Assistant in the Cataloging Department.  The position reports to the head of the Cataloging Department. The individual will be responsible for copy cataloging of materials in all formats (print and non-print materials) using current cataloging tools RDA, USMARC21, OCLC Connexion and other national standards in the Libraries Integrated Library System (ILS) SIRSI/Dynix. Assist with local name and heading Authorities maintenance. Ability to work independently, in a team, and in a project oriented environment.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Catalog DLC and member copy cataloging of library resources in all formats using the Libraries Integrated Library System SIRSI/Dynix, OCLC Connexion, and other cataloging tools;
  • Create provisional and minimal-level bibliographic records for resources that have no record available in OCLC Connexion;
  • Participate in collaborative cataloging projects with other areas of the libraries, such as Special Collections and Government Documents;
  • Assisting with local authorities maintenance;
  • Assist with the maintenance, edit and revision the department’s web site and Sharepoint site;
  • Assist the department head with special projects as identified;
  • Assist the Cataloging Student Supervisor with routine tasks; and,
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

This position is a 12 month Graduate Assistant position and requires 20 hours per week.
