New Subscriptions Added

We are pleased to announce that the LSU Libraries are now adding the new journal subscriptions announced last fall prior to the hurricanes. Since the subscriptions are for a range of titles and publishers, they may have different start dates. Please check the journal status on the following list to determine the availability.
Just a reminder that these new subscriptions are the result of the Journal Assessment Project and your input on the journals needed in your department. The titles on this list were requested by several faculty from multiple departments. We have additional journal titles requested by faculty during the assessment and will add them as funds become available. We are moving as quickly toward electronic format and distribution of content as finances permit.

New journal subscriptions are being added to the LSU Libraries collection as a result of the 2004 Serials Survey and Journal Assessment. Faculty recommended 1,583 titles for new subscriptions. If subscriptions were entered only for requests by two or more departments or faculty, the estimated cost for the first year would be $293,500. With only $50,000 available for new subscriptions, selection criteria had to be established. Some new subscriptions have already been entered. Others from the list are being added currently and some will be activated in 2006. Selection criteria follow.
Title Priority:
Titles recommended by faculty from different academic departments were given top priority in the following order:The Libraries must periodically evaluate journals to control expenditures, fund new titles, and meet electronic resources demands. Additional funding from the University and funds freed by the journals cancellation project have enabled the Libraries to add the new subscriptions. Journal subscriptions require recurring funds, and future subscriptions will be entered as permanent funds become available.
- Titles recommended by faculty in four or more departments
- Titles recommended by faculty in three departments
- Titles recommended by faculty in two departments
- Single department requests by the numbers of faculty requesting the title
Other Factors:
The following factors were combined with the title priority in finalizing new subscription titles:- Journal titles previously canceled were re-instituted only when substantial orders for articles from those titles had been placed with Interlibrary Borrowing (ILB) or a document delivery provider resulting in a subscription being the more cost effective option.
- Subscription costs were also a factor. Titles with annual fees exceeding $5,000 were not added when document delivery (DD) was available.
- New subscriptions were not added for full-text titles electronically available to date, and, in some instances, when six to twelve month embargoes were in place (i.e. current issues for those periods not yet available). Exceptions were made when articles from the titles had been ordered frequently via ILB/DD.

New Subscriptions
New Databases and Enhancements
New databases and enhancements were funded by a combination of cancellations and electronic resources monies. These new databases and enhancements have been added in the last two years.
Canceled Subscriptions Circulation and electronic access statistics, cost per use, and faculty in-put were the basis of cancellation decisions. The University is being receptive to our requests for added funding but a substantial permanent increase to the materials budget is required to prevent further cancellations in the future.
