Description
The National Technical Information Service (NTIS) is the nation's largest central resource for government-funded scientific, technical, engineering, and business related information available today. As part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, NTIS supports the nation's economic growth by providing access to information that stimulates innovation and discovery. The main NTIS website allows for searching but does not provide free access to full-text documents.
A separate database--Depository Access to Reports, Technical & Scientific (DARTS)--provides access to bibliographic records for approximately 240,000 publications from 1964-2000 and links to free online content. You must obtain a password from the Reference Desk to access this site.
Note: Most federally-funded technical reports are not included in the U.S. Government Printing Office's Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP), in which LSU Libraries participates. While LSU and other libraries throughout the country have collections, both large and small, of federally-funded technical reports, they are often not found in the libraries' online catalogs for a variety of reasons. Consequently, technical report literature, often called "gray" literature, can be difficult to identify and locate.
Finding an NTIS title in Microfiche
The Government Documents/Microforms Department of LSU Librarires holds many microfiche copies of technical reports issued by the NTIS from 1963 to 1996. NTIS microfiche are arranged by their NTIS accession number. (Note: There is some overlap between reports issued by the NTIS and other government agencies.)
Citations for technical reports often include agency names, agency report numbers or series, contract numbers, grant numbers, and accession numbers. All of these numbers and/or letters could be important in locating the report.
These numbers can be found for 1971-1994 titles in the Government Reports Index (C 51.9/4:) and for titles 1990 and later, in the online NTIS database. The following list is a general guide to the microfiche titles held by LSU Libraries. Ranges do not indicate complete holdings. The bulk of the NTIS holdings are in AD, N, and PB.
