Mathematics
Collection Development Policy Statement
Faculty:
The Mathematics Department is part of the LSU College of Arts and Sciences. Over forty tenure-track faculty members are involved in research and support of the graduate programs. All have the Ph.D. degree. There are over forty instructors.
Students:
Mathematics makes a significant contribution to general education by its service courses offered to non-mathematics majors. The number of students enrolled in mathematics courses as part of other degree programs is indicated below. Other departments heavily served by these courses include but are not limited to Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, and Elementary and Secondary Education. The number of Mathematics majors by level is also listed.

Non-subject characteristics:
Collected extensively: Major secondary works (monographs), monographic series, proceedings, serials/journals, specialized reference tools (i.e. indexes, abstracts, encyclopedias, handbooks, dictionaries, etc.).
Collected selectively: Foreign dissertations/theses, English language dissertations/theses, popular treatments, biographies, catalogs, undergraduate and upper-division textbooks.
Collected extensively: Traditional print formats (i.e. monographs, serials, etc); electronic formats (i.e. Internet/networked materials, databases, electronic subscriptions, etc.). See The Criteria and Guidelines for Acquiring and Providing Access to Electronic Resources for information on evaluating and requesting such resources.
Collected selectively: microforms, CD-ROMS, charts, pamphlets, audio and video recordings.
Collected extensively: Materials published in the last decade.
Collected selectively: Materials published more than ten years ago.
Collected extensively: United States, Canada, Europe, Russia, Japan, and Australia.
Collected selectively: All others. A growing responsibility for the Caribbean, Central America, and South America exists throughout the Libraries and may impact Mathematics.
Collected extensively: English, French, German and Russian. Others in translation.
Collected selectively: All others. Spanish-language materials are becoming more important throughout the Libraries and this may impact Mathematics.
Collected extensively: Contemporary period (less than ten years old).
Collected selectively: All other periods greater than ten years old.
