Collection Development Policy Statement
Library's Collection Development Objectives
The LSU Libraries support faculty and student research and the Manship School of Mass Communication curriculum including the subfields of advertising and electronic media including radio-television broadcasting, cablecasting, satellite communication, Internet, and other new telecommunications technologies. Print and electronic journalism, media management including law and ethics, political communication including campaign development, lobbying, polling, and public affairs, and public relations from undergraduate through the Ph.D. in Mass Communication and Public Affairs are also supported along with research projects and programs conducted on behalf of the Reilly Center For Media and Public Affairs, the Media Leader's Forum, the annual Manship School Environmental Communication Conference, and other initiatives.
Curriculum Program Descriptions
The Manship School of Mass Communication is a free-standing college at LSU that is accredited by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. The faculty is composed of 13 professors, 4 associate professors, 10 assistant professors, 4 instuctors and 14 adjunct faculty members. The Bachelor of Mass Communication degree is conferred on students who complete a concentration in one of the following five areas: advertising, electronic media, journalism, political communication and public relations. Students are also offered the Master of Mass Communication and the Ph.D. in Mass Communication and Public Affairs which began in 1999 and is the only one in the country to focus exclusively on media and politics.

LSU Libraries will purchase electronic titles on a case by case basis. The request for electronic titles may be intiated by the liaison and/or a member of the department. Decisions will be influenced by the titles that will benefit the greatest number of students, faculty and staff at the best possible price. Purchase of remotely accessed texts must follow the policy and procedures set forth in Procedures for Acquiring and Processing Electronic Resources.
Specific Delimitations
To meet the Collection Development Objectives outlined in Part I, titles will selected in accordance with the following criteria:
Type
Collected extensively: Major secondary works (monographs), monographic series, proceedings, serials/journals, specialized reference tools ( i.e. indexes, abstracts, encyclopedias, handbooks, dictionaries, etc.).
Collected selectively: English language dissertations/theses, popular treatments, and biographies.
Physical Format
Collected extensively: Traditional print formats (i.e. monographs, serials, etc); electronic formats (i.e. CD-ROMs, databases, electronic subscriptions, etc.).
Collected selectively: microforms, leaf services, pamphlets, audio and video recordings.
Imprint Date
Collected extensively: Materials published in the last decade.
Collected selectively: Materials published more than ten years ago.
Place of Publication
Collected extensively: United States, Canada, Europe, Russia, Australia, Japan.
Collected selectively: All others.
Languages
