LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE

Collection Development Policy Statement

I. Purpose and Program Description

A. Library's Collection Development Objective

The library and information science collection serves students and professionals in librarianship, information science, and children's and young adult literature.

It supports the LSU curricula, particularly the School of Library and Information Science, and serves as a resource collection for those students whose curricula requirements include children's and young adult literature, reading methods, design, and related subjects.

LSU Libraries collects the core literature of library and information science and children's and young adult literature. The collection emphasizes those materials classed in Z662-Z996 and Z1035-37. PN 1009 (juvenile literature) is also considered. The young people's collection contains representative examples of the literature for pre-K and grades K-12.

B. Curriculum Program Descriptions

The School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) is a graduate school whose degree programs include the MLIS (Masters Degree in Library and Information Science and CLIS (Certificate of Advanced Study in Library and Information Science.) The Systems Science degree is offered jointly with the Department of Computer Science. There is also a dual degree program with the Department of History. The SLIS and Computer Science Department cross-list courses, and students and faculty utilize the resources of the LIS collection. A dual degree program with the Department of History is offered for those interested in work as an archivist.

There are ten faculty members in SLIS. All have Ph.D. degrees. There are three adjunct professors and four professor emeriti.

The number of degrees awarded to students in SLIS for the past five years are shown in the following table:
