Landscape Architecture

Collection Development Policy Statement

Library's Collection Development Objectives

In the discipline of landscape architecture, the mission of the LSU Libraries is to support the curricular and research needs of the of the students who are engaged in the curricula of either the five-year professional degree program or the master's degree program of the School of Landscape Architecture or one of its contingent programs.

Curriculum Program Description

Residential, commercial, urban, and regional design in the Lower Mississippi Valley are the major components of the studio based curricula of the School of Landscape Architecture. Study in this field involves the materials of many disciplines such as: architecture, art, engineering, botany, law, sociology, psychology, geology, hydrology, geography, economics, and management. The School is fully accredited by the American Society of Landscape Architects. The professional degree is a five year baccalaureate degree. Two master's tracks are provided; one two year advanced studies program for persons with a professional degree, and a three year track in which persons with no training as a landscape architect obtain the professional master's degree. Both programs require a thesis.

Exchange programs with Heriot-Watt University in Edinburg, Scotland, Manchester Metropolitan University in Manchester, England, and Rapperswil Engineering Technical University in Switzerland have been established. Recruitment of foreign students is active, especially through professional contacts in Mexico, Turkey and Southeast Asia. A one semester internship program with professional firms in Japan has been in place for several years. Field trips to Asia and Japan, Mexico and the East and West coasts of the U.S. are also conducted by the faculty during the summer and holiday breaks respectively.

The curricula is supported by the electronic services of the Computer-Aided Design and Geographic Information System (CADGIS) Laboratory, which is jointly funded by the College of Art and Design and the Department of Geography and Anthropology, and the MODE (Microcomputer Office for Design Exploration) Lab which is primarily for faculty research with Macintosh equipment. A database of faculty-owned slides is being created within the School. A local farm which became Hilltop Arboretum was willed to the University and serves the School of Landscape Architecture as a 14 acre outdoor laboratory.

There are 16 faculty members in the School: 11 professors, 4 associate professors, and 1 emeritus professor.
