Classed Analysis
LSU is currently assigned to the institutions in Group C of the North American Title Count publication. The Group C category is for libraries with fewer than 850,000 titles.
In the table of classed analysis presented here, data is provided for the LC classes HM-HX from the 1989 National Shelflist Count, the 1993 North American Title Count, and from a computer-generated list done at LSU reflecting the holdings in Fall, 1996.
In the 1989 National Shelflist Count LSU is listed in Group B, with libraries having 800,000 to 1,100,000 titles. The 1989 data was gathered by measuring the library's shelflist which included materials classed in Dewey as well as LC. The 1993 data only reflect holdings classed in LC which accounts for the drop in holdings records and consequently in the drop from Group B to Group C.
For the 1993 data, the LSU holdings were compared to the average of the Group C institutions (excluding the Houston Academy of Medicine) to ascertain if the LSU holdings were above or below (-) the average of the group.
Based on that analysis, LSU had greater strengths in Social Work (HV 1-4995), the Family, etc. (HQ), Social Science Theory (HM), and Criminology and Penology (HV 6001-9999). The greatest weakness was in the class for substance abuse (HV 4996-5840).
LSU Libraries was perceived to have a ranking of "4" in the RLG conspectus reports in 1983 and 1986, except for erotica (in HQ) and charities in HV 1-4995. These two classes were rated "3." Because of budget cuts, LSU has not sustained its status in the Group B category where a number of peer institutions are ranked. Primarily for this reason the perceived RLG conspectus ranking for the HM-HX's at this time is a "3." Strengths and weaknesses noted above should be considered in future collection development decisions. See the following tables: Collecting Levels and Additional Justification Data.
