Guidelines for Recording Holdings: Unbound Fascicles
A fascicle is a temporary division of a printed item. Many of our standing orders are issued as fascicles and then bound as each volume is complete.- Enumeration of part is present: Record the fascicles as subsequent-order designators, using a separate 866 field for each incomplete volume. Indicate the fact that they are unbound by adding a public note (subfield |z) enclosed in parentheses.
When a volume becomes complete, transfer the holdings to the compressed range of holdings.
Example: Volumes 13 and 14 are not yet complete:
v.1-12 v.13:fasc.1-5|z(unbound) v.14:fasc.1|z(unbound)
Example: Volume 13 is now complete:v.1-13 v.14:fac.1|z(unbound)
Example: Fascicles are not published in sequence:v.1-7 v.8:fasc.41,fasc.43,fasc.45|z(unbound) v.9:fasc.42,fasc.44,fasc.46|z(unbound)
- Enumeration of part is not present: Record the fascicles as first-order designators, using a separate 866 field. Indicate the fact that the fascicles are unbound by adding a public note (subfield |z) enclosed in parentheses. When a volume becomes complete, transfer the holdings to the compressed range of holdings.
Example:
v.1-12 fasc.75-79 |z (unbound)
