  • Rush books that are for Reserve or are Rush Notifies (MIDL LOCATION ONLY) are brought to the Circulation desk.
  • Rush books for other special locations are put on the pickup shelves. You can also call the special location to let them know the book is processed and can be found on the pickup shelf.

  • Book jackets (dust covers) for Education Resources books (location is MIDL, i..., or SLIS, ...) and Design books (location is desi, ...) must stay with the piece (see the Collection Services web page--NOTIS documentation--Location codes--for more detailed information).
  • All other book jackets can be discarded.
  • Paperwork can be discarded with the exception of:
    1. Serials processing slips that contain specific instructions for previous volume processing.

Steps for Ironing on Selin Labels:

**Mixed Format materials need to be processed according to different guidelines**

  1. Match selin label with the call number inside of the piece (usually found on the reverse side of the title page).

  2. If the call number inside the piece matches the selin label, cut the selin label from the strip. If the call number does not match, put that piece aside to correct/retype the selin label at a later time.

  3. Iron the selin label on the lower part of the spine. You can trim the label to make it fit on the spine if necessary. DO NOT COVER ANY IMPORTANT INFORMATION THAT CANNOT BE FOUND ELSEWHERE ON THE PIECE.
*****Blue IEEE books: Do not cover the numbers that are printed on the spine. Trim the labels to iron them to the "side" of these numbers or iron the selin label on the lower left corner of the front cover.*****

  4. If the label cannot be ironed on the spine, it can be ironed on the lower corner of the front cover.

  5. DO NOT MELT THE SELIN LABELS.
Adjust the "flat" iron to # 1 or # 2 and the "hand-held" iron to the low/medium setting.

  6. Make sure all pieces have been stamped with the LSU LIBRARIES property stamp on the top edge of the book for pieces at least 3/4" thick and on the title page for books thinner than 3/4".

  7. All books (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF REFERENCE) need to have a date due slip glued in on the last page before the inside cover.
Do not cover any important information!

  8. All books must be targetted (tattle taped) for security reasons.

    Paperback (soft cover) books:
    • targetted with the double sided tattle tape strip (sticky on 2 sides--have two pieces of plastic to remove)
    • target strip is placed inside of the piece by removing the "dark" plastic strip, adhering the target strip to the inside margin, pressing down against the back side of the page and removing the "slightly transparent" plastic strip.
    Hardback books:
    • are targetted with a single target (stick on only one side--have one piece of plastic to remove)
    • are targetted in the spine of the book provided the spine is not glued to the text block
    • A bayonet (long flat silver metal rod) is slipped into the spine of the book.
    • single target strip is attached about 1/4" down on the bayonet with the shiny silver side facing the inside of the text block
    • Pull the bayonet down until the target strip is no longer visible and press firmly against the spine to adhere the target strip to the text block.
    • Pull firmly on the bayonet to remove it from the piece. If the target strip does not adhere and is pulled out when the bayonet is removed, simply move the target strip up a little closer to the end of the bayonet and try again.
Three ring binders, spiral bound pieces, etc.
    • adhere a single target strip to the last page of the piece
    • cut a plastic strip of white "electrical type" tape about an inch longer than the piece
    • cover the target strip with the tape

Where do the books go after they have been processed?

  1. Rush/Notify:
    • Middleton stacks location -- bring to circulation staff to notify patron/professor.
    • Special areas (Chem, Ref, Desi, Music, etc.) -- place on appropriate pick-up shelf in Serials mail area. Call Dept. to let them know the book is processed and wehre the book is located. Special area staff will notify the patron/professor
  2. Rush for Reserve
    • Bring the completed processed book to Mona Jarreau in Circulation.

  3. Middleton location only:
    • 4th floor stack maintenance office.
  4. Other locations: These include Chemistry, Design, Reference, Education Resources, Music, and Hill.
    • Books for these locations (exception Design) are to be removed from the truck after the count is done and placed on the pickup shelf for that location. The pickup shelves are in the alcove near the mail table.
    • One exception to this rule is the Design books. They need to be placed on the truck in the "breezeway" that is under the "DESI" sign. We must take the Design books up to the fishbowl to be desensitized before they are placed on the Design pickup s helf. The Design library does not have a security system and it creates problems for their patrons who bring design books into Middleton by setting off the security system.
