- AC
- Added copy. An additional copy, identical to an item already cataloged and in the library collection.
- AV
- Added volume. A subsequent part of a series or set already catalogued and in the library collection.
- Annuals, or non-periodical serials
- These titles are published annually, biennially, quadrennially or at an irregular frequency. They are often published out of numerical order.
- Approval Plan
- A method of acquiring library materials in which a vendor is given a subject profile outlining what types of books and other materials are to be supplied. Because these items are received shelf-ready, they are not returnable.
- Blanket Order
- An arrangement with a publisher which allows us to receive all their publications automatically.
- DE
- Different Edition. Another version of an item in the library collection, differing in content, publisher, language, etc.
- Firm Order
- A "one time" order for a single item or complete set of items not profiled by YBP.
- General Order
- LSU term for orders of number or unnumbered monographic series or sets which are classified separately.
- Locator Record
- Short bibliographic form using 900 numbers, containing the author (910), title (924), imprint (926), and edition (925) fields
- Monographic Series (numbered) and analyzed
- Although each individual volume carries a series title and a number in that series, the volumes have their own authors and titles like books (monographs). When the subject matter of volumes in the series is closely related, the series is classified t ogether, meaning that each volume is given the same call number, differentiated by the volume number. Some number monographic series are also analyzed, that is, a separate bibliographic record with the individual title, author, and subject heading 's is created for each volume. The individual records also indicate the series title and number in the series.
- Monographic Series (numbered) and classified separately
- Although each individual volume carries a series title and a number in that series, the volumes have their own authors and titles just like books (monographs). When the subject matter of volumes in the series is NOT closely related, the series is classified separately (locally, "cat as sep" or "class sep"), meaning that each volume is given a separate call number. There is no bibliographic record for the series itself; therefore, there is not summary holdings statement for the series. Only t he separate bibliographic records with the individual title, author, and subject heading is created. The individual records also indicate the series title and number in the series.
- Monographic Sets
- Sets are multi-volume monographs, such as complete works of an individual, encyclopedias, or dictionaries. Sets may be published over a long period of time but they are distinguished from serials in having a finite publication plan; that is, completi on is anticipated.
- NIL
- Not in library.
- NSSER
- Non-subscription serials is a term used at LSU for any serial which is not currently received on subscription or standing order, but which is being published.
- Notification Slip
- A service provided by the approval vendor for slips to be sent for items not supplied on approval (automatic shipments), but which the library may want to order.
- OPR
- Order, pay, receipt record in the NOTIS system.
- Serial
- A publication issued in successive parts and usually bearing numerical or chronological designations. Serials are intended to continue indefinitely. Examples are: periodicals, newspapers, yearbooks, etc.
- Standing Order
- Annuals, non periodical serials (a.k.a. irregulars), monographic series and sets can be acquired on standing order. Standing order means the publisher or vendor will automatically supply subsequent volumes "until forbidden," that is, until the librar y asks them to stop.
