Subject: Access/Cataloging Levels

Purpose: To establish what levels of intellectual access (cataloging in the Libraries' online catalog and in OCLC) will be provided for materials in the LSU Libraries' collections in order to fulfill the Libraries' mission while making the most effective use of library staff and resources.

POLICY

A: The LSU Libraries will provide full-level cataloging in accordance with national standards for all purchased and gift materials that selectors add to the collection, with the exception of materials noted in Section B, below. This cataloging will be entered into OCLC and the Libraries' catalog.

B: When no appropriate Library of Congress or OCLC member-library catalog records are available, Libraries' staff will provide minimal-level cataloging (MLC) (Defined as OCLC Level K with optional fields to be included as needed) for the following categories of materials. In all cases, OCLC is searched for usable cataloging before resorting to MLC.

  • Education Resources materials not accepted by TechPro (kits, realia, etc.) - MLC in local catalog only
  • Exhibition catalogs (only if not related to Louisiana) - MLC in local catalog only
  • Louisiana-related ephemera being added to the LLMVC, as selected by the curator - MLC in local catalog only
  • LSU College of Design Final Projects/Research Reports - MLC in local catalog only with no subject access
  • LSU Dissertations - MLC in local catalog and in OCLC, with subject access provided through the addition of uncontrolled keywords (field 653) supplied by author
  • LSU Theses - MLC in local catalog and OCLC, with no subject access
