Annual Mid-Winter Meetings

Introduction    Skip Introduction

In looking back at various three-year plans that the Section has proposed, it's clear that we've been talking about having a mid-winter meeting since at least 1991. In January 2003 it became more than talk. From Thursday night, January 9, through Sunday morning, January 12, 18 Section members, a handful of interested allied professionals, and our Council liaison, Joel Wurl, participated in the first annual Section meeting.

In the months between the first annual midwinter meeting and the 2003 SAA Annual Conference in Los Angeles, Laurie Baty, then VM Section Chair, working on behalf of the Section as a whole, approached SAA Council seeking their imprimatur for making the midwinter meeting an official SAA event. Just before the August 2003 Annual meeting the Section received word that Council had voted in favor of the proposal; the VM Section Midwinter Meeting became an offically approved SAA meeting.

All members of the Section and other interested individuals who wish to take part in Section leadership are encouraged to attend the Midwinter Meetings. The goal of the Meeting is to provide the Section leadership with good fellowship as well as an opportunity to complete planning activities for the coming year. These plans are needed for the efficient and timely operation of the Section, its working groups, and working group divisions. Those working groups, with their divisions, are:

    Administration - bylaws, 3-year plan, annual meeting, nominations and elections;

    Publishing -newsletter, Web site, bibliography;

    Education and Special Topics - advanced workshops, professional programs, standards, and a whole lot more.
